In November 1994, the Asia-Pacific Legal Metrology Forum (APLMF) was established
with 14 member economies from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
region, and they were: Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China,
Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New
Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and USA. Now
the membership expanded to 20 full member ecobnomies and 6 corresponding
economies as of November 2007. The detailed membership can be found here.
As one of the regional organizations working in close liaison with the
OIML, the APLMF promotes communication and interaction among the legal
metrology organizations and seeks harmonization of legal metrology in
the Asia-Pacific region.
The National Measurement Institute, Australia (NMIA) established its
Presidency and Secretariat and had carried its actibities for 8 years.
They worked towards founding the formation of harmonization in legal metrology
in the Asia-Pacific region.
In January 2002, the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) succeeded
NMIA and assumed both the Presidency and the Secretariat. The NMIJ put
much effort especially into organizing training courses on legal metrology
designed for developing economies who wish to establish a firm foundation
of international trade. This project was run together with the Asia Pacific
Economy Cooperation (APEC). During their operation of 6 years, more than
700 individuals attended the training courses and seminars and used the
experience for the development of legal metrology system in their home
economies.
In October 2007, the General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection
and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of PR China took over the responsibility of Presidency
and Secretariat.
