2.4 How to use trains in Tokyo with an IC card (SUICA / PASMO)

The most convenient method to get around Tokyo is the use of trains and / or subways. When you use trains, we recommend using an IC card which is used very frequently in Tokyo although you can also buy one-time ticket. This is a contactless & electronic prepaid card. You can use this card to ride all railways and subways (and some local buses). This card is also available in many convenience stores and supermarkets.

The IC card is called as SUICA (issued by JR / Japan Railway) or PASMO (issued by other private railways). SUICA and PASMO are fully compatible. The photos of the cards are shown below.

Picture
You can purchase SUICA at the stations of JR (including the station in Narita/Haneda airport), and PASMO at the stations of private railways including ‘Yurikamome’. You can purchase the card at a ticket machine at a station (or ask a staff). The card is sold with price of JPY1,000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 10,000 (about 10 to 100 EUR) including a deposit (JPY500).

As you use the card, the balance is deducted (the amount is shown on a ticket barrier of the station). If you charge the card by adding cash at the ticket machine, the card can be reused in many times. If you stay Odaiba area (e.g. Sunroute), the cost of Yurikamome required to commute to the meeting venue is about JPY500/day. So, we recommend charging the card up to JPY3000 when you purchase it.

When you leave Japan, we recommend using up the balance down to zero. You can use the card even at the tax-free shops in the airport. If you ask a staff of a railway station, you can return the card. Then the balance (with a deduction of handling fee) and deposit (500) will be refunded. But, all of the staff may not understand English.
