Measurements in a dynamic world

The theme for World Metrology Day (WMD) 2016 was ‘Measurements in a Dynamic World’. The topic was chosen to align with the increasing rapid pace of change in measurement science, and indeed of the world around us.

Metrology plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment.

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

​How APLMF economies celebrated World Metrology Day​

New Zealand: Following on from the successful Metrology Society of Australasia Conference in Queenstown last year, all those with an interest in metrology were invited to join in on a  tour the of Measurement Standards Laboratory of New Zealand Laboratories, participate in workshops and hear from Chris Sutton about the revision of the International System of Standards.  
Australia: The National Measurement Institute invited people to ‘In conversation’, a forum to mark World Metrology Day.

‘In Conversation’ focussed on better measurement in food standards with particular focus on safety and innovation in technology. They explored the benefits of accurate measurement which can result in improved food outcomes. Measurement techniques used in the food sector are dynamic and can be complex. The discussion explored ways in which food and measurement experts can work together in this changing sector. 

The conversation was led by Mr Peter Schutz, Chair, Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre and Dr Samuel Godefroy, Full Professor, Food Risk Analysis and Regulatory Systems, Department of Food Science, University Laval, Québec, Canada.
